I love maps. Lately I’ve been drawing maps of some of the key locations in the story Mr. McInerny called–I’m a little embarrassed to say–Stoop of Mastodon Meadow.
I don’t think I’m giving away any spoilers when I show you some samples of what I’ve done. I’ll start with a close-up of Malchio’s classroom at the Meadow. See the parallel rows of desks, with Malchio’s desk at the front? Those of you who have read the book will remember the chaos that Gormy’s pet capybara, Melvin, caused on my very first day of school in Patria. I indicated where Melvin ran into the closet. For those of you who have read the book, that turned out to be very significant, didn’t it.
Below is the scene from the school Fête that was held outdoors at night at the Meadow. Do you see the circular table in the courtyard marked with “R F O”? That’s where I sat with Farnsworth and Rose–well, that’s where I sat until things got “interesting” and Rose, Farnsworth and I had to sneak into the school. See the apple tree in the courtyard? That’s where I and the rest of the Fifth Ledgers “hang out” in the morning before first bell.
Now here’s a close-up showing Malchio’s classroom on the first floor, and the boys’ dormitory up above it on the third floor. Notice the dottled line? That’s supposed to be on the roof of the school. See how it leads to the “F” that seems to be hanging onto the edge of the school roof over the courtyard? Yup, that was Farnsworth. But I’ll let you enjoy reading the rest…
